Clear solution

Space Systems/Loral needed a more proactive management culture to help the company increase its market share of the satellite manufacturing industry. This involved providing its front-line management team with new operational processes and training tools to help reduce costs and increase annual satellite production without compromising quality. Partnering with DB&A was the clear solution.

1. Challenge

Significant differences between bid estimates and actual project costs

Leaders lacked confidence to effectively address issues

2. Findings
No efficient costing models in place to measure productivity and identify areas where resources were being compromised

A passive management culture was created by both the lack of management training as well as advancement in the company being based on technical expertise, rather than on an aptitude for management.

3. Goals
Shift the management culture from a passive, reactive management style to a proactive one

Develop structured goal and production plans

Help supervisors understand their roles and responsibilities by giving more specific and measureable goals

  Streamline the production process

4. Recommendations
Develop parameters for work content, including specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, and time-based goals

Create tactics to achieve goals and then align the organization accordingly

Implement specific tools to assist managers on day-to-day basis

5. Results
Achieved 155% of promised cost saving, with a total value of $15 million

Improved synergy within teams and across units, allowing progress on growth goal

Increased productivity with no adverse impact on quality
